PAGD cancels meeting scheduled for Tue due to non-availability of Mehbooba | | | eaRLY tIMES rEPORT
Srinagar, June 28: Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) -- an alliance of five political parties -- has canceled the meeting that was scheduled to be held in the summer capital, Srinagar, on Tuesday to discuss the future course of action. Senior CPI (M) leader and PAGD spokesperson Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami told UNI that the PAGD meeting, which was scheduled to be held on Tuesday at the residence of the alliance chairman Dr Farooq Abdullah on Gupkar road in Srinagar, has been cancelled. He said the meeting was cancelled due to personal engagement of PDP president and PAGD vice chairperson Mehbooba Mufti. “The meeting was called to exchange notes with each others about the APM,” he added. The PAGD had called a meeting days after its members attended an All Party Meeting (APM) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at New Delhi last week. PAGD -- including NC, PDP, Awani National Conference (ANC) CPI(M) and Peoples Movement -- was created after Article 370 and 35 A was abrogated and J&K was divided into two Union Territories on August 5, 2019. Prime Minister Modi chaired a meeting of 14 leaders from eight political parties in J&K on Thursday to discuss the future course of action for the Union Territory. This was the first such initiative by the Centre since the abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile state of J&K on August 5, 2019. The Centre had invited four former chief ministers – Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and Mehbooba Mufti, besides four Deputy Chief Ministers – Muzafar Hussain Beigh, Tara Chand, Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta. Leaders of six other political parties -- Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami of CPI(M), Sajad Gani Lone of Peoples Conference, Mohammad Altaf Bukhari of Apni Party, Prof Bhim Singh of Panthers Party, Ravinder Raina of BJP and G A Mir of Congress – were also invited at the meeting. After attending the meeting, the attendees expressed satisfaction over the assurances given by the Prime Minister and the Home Minister during the meeting. However, alleging that the successive governments at New Delhi reneged on their promises, former chief minister and NC president Farooq Abdullah said there was a level of mistrust in Jammu and Kashmir and it was for the Centre to remove it. “The first Prime Minister of India (Jawaharlal Nehru) promised plebiscite to the people of J&K, but backtracked. Then, former PM Narasimha Rao before (1996) elections promised us autonomy and said sky is the limit, but not independence. We said we never asked (for) independence, we have asked for autonomy. He promised us from the floor of the house… Where is that?” Dr Farooq told reporters after returning to Srinagar on Saturday after attending the APM in New Delhi. Reiterating that there will be no compromise on Article 370, former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said that the people of J&K will fight for the restoration of the special status of the erstwhile state even if takes years. Similar views were expressed by former chief minister and NC vice president Omar Abdullah though he said that it would be foolish to expect that the current BJP regime at the Centre would return Article 370. Meanwhile, terming 'sub judice' argument given by some leaders to mislead people and avoid taking a stand on revocation of special status of erstwhile state of J&K by the Centre as specious and evasive, NC MP Justice (retd) Hasnain Masoodi on Sunday said that the Centre is free to reverse its August 5, 2019 decision. Masoodi said that the pendency of petitions in Supreme Court (SC), challenging August 5 decisions does not stand in the way of the Centre to undo injustice and revoke a constitutionally suspect law. “The perpetrator of an unconstitutional act, notwithstanding challenge to the act, is always free to reverse the decision and restore majesty of law and constitutional supremacy. It also does not either forbid a person, group of persons or a political party from articulating its viewpoint or taking a stand on the matter,” he said.
