Third wave scare | | | The detection of 51 cases of new Delta plus variant across 12 states in the country so far is an indication that third wave of COVID-19 may have arrived. On Sunday Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in Maan Ki Baat stated that the Covid threat remains and “we have to focus on vaccination.” He urged every Indian to shed vaccine hesitancy and also cited the example of his mother, underscoring that vaccines are safe. He once again reiterated that citizens should not pay heed towards rumours as vaccines are safe and trust science and India’s scientists. At present the second wave has relented but the experts have already sounded an alert that the third wave is on its way. The vaccines are the only protective shield that can fight the virus. Everyone is asking people to get vaccinated so that India remains equipped to fight the virus which is raising its ugly head again. Delta plus variant possesses all the features of Delta variant with one additional mutation that is found in Beta variant, first detected in South Africa. The variant was first seen in Europe in March this year. It was, however, brought into public domain on June 13. Experts are of the opinion that vaccines can play an important role in preventing the people from getting infected and even if the vaccinated people get infected the severity of infection won’t be that high and it was experienced during the second wave. People who had taken the COVID-19 jabs fought the virus in a much better way than the ones who had not taken the vaccine. The Jammu and Kashmir administration too seems to be gearing up to tackle the possible third wave. The shopkeepers and owners of other business establishments have been directed to ensure that people not carrying the vaccination certificates or the negative COVID-19 test report should not be allowed to enter their premises. The third COVID-19 wave can be fought in a much better way if people remain prepared and follow the COVID-19 sops in letter and spirit. People have already witnessed two waves and are aware about how the virus spreads. For the time being people need to avoid big social gatherings and unnecessary travel. Taking precautions is the best way to remain safe. How masses fight the third COVID-19 wave depends entirely on them as the battle against the virus is still on.
