EARLY TIMES REPORT

UDHAMPUR, June 30: Government Degree College (GDC) Chenani under the aegis of its Science Club, organized an online programme on “Role of Chemistry in Covid-19 Pandemic”.
In this programme, the students expressed their views through PowerPoint presentations on how the chemists are making breakthroughs in this global pandemic. Students chose topics pertaining to the formulations like alcohol-based hand-sanitizers, surgical spirit, surface wipes, bleach, chemistry of soap and water etc. The keywords used were-Coronavirus, prevention, spreading, Hand sanitizers, Surface Transmission and safety. Students mentioned that soap is great where there is an easy access of water and a sink. But in the absence of accessibility of water, the right choice is the hand sanitizer, whose main product is ethanol, the isopropyl alcohol in surgical spirit. Students also mentioned the name of an antiseptic, viz., benzalkonium chloride which is the active ingredient of surface wipes. Further, while talking about Covid-19 vaccine, it was shared with students that water is the main ingredient that makes up the vaccine solution, mostly all vaccines contain different types of salts, one example would be the common Sodium chloride. All this information inculcated amongst the students an interest to know more about chemicals, their medicinal use and how they could be used in different ways.
Dr Pragya Khanna, Principal of the College appreciated the efforts of the students and remarked that all five senses involve intricate series of chemical reactions and interactions in the body, hence Chemistry is all around us, and the better we know chemistry, the better we know our world. The program was organized by Subhasana Sharma.
