Jammu at receiving end
7/5/2021 12:14:42 AM
Transition of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory had evoked hope that the discrimination which Jammu faced during the past 70-years would end, but it has not happened. Many development projects that were to be completed within a stipulated time have missed multiple deadlines and Jammu is still awaiting the promised vikas.
In Rajouri district alone around 50 developmental projects have not been completed despite deadlines being extended again and again.
Many areas in Jammu region don't have proper drinking water facilities and people even in the 21st century are forced to fetch the contaminated water from streams and ponds to meet their daily requirements. Out of 68 proposed water schemes in Rajouri district, the Jal Shakti Department has been able to complete only 24 schemes till date.
The tall claim of the government that every household would get a tap by this year-end is just an announcement aimed at keeping the people happy. The ground situation indicates that it would take many years for the government to provide potable water to everyone.
Since the summer season has commenced in Jammu, people are witnessing unscheduled power cuts. The Power Department has not been able to mitigate the sufferings of a common man. Everyday announcements are made about transmission system being improved to provide uninterrupted power supply to the people, but these claims remain confined to making noise only as ground situation continues to remain grim.
When Article 370 was scrapped on August 5, 2019, maximum people in Jammu region had welcomed the move. They were of the opinion that Jammu would witness prosperity and development but their hopes stand dashed as during the past two years, the helmsmen have taken many unilateral decisions that have hit the Jammu people hard. The recent decision of Jammu and Kashmir Government to scrap off the 149-year old Durbar Move practice has come as rude shock to the business fraternity in Jammu region. The decision was taken without taking the traders into confidence. If the government sticks to its order of scrapping Durbar Move, Jammu is set to witness a huge loss as the business activities used to be on peak due to people of Kashmir come and spending the season in the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
The tall slogans of vikas and equitable development stand punctured as the arbitrary decisions of the government have hit a common man in Jammu below the belt.
