jammu, July 4: Jammu and Kashmir Government in the recent past has announced many historic decisions, people of Jammu want the present dispensation to make yet another landmark move i.e. to treat common man at par with the VVIPs.
A resident said, "Despite we facing pesky power cuts in the sweltering heat, the VVIPs get the electricity 24x7. They should be treated at par with us and electricity should be provided to them as it's given to us. They should also come to know how difficult it's to survive without a fan or an air conditioner in the peak summer season."
On Saturday Principal Secretary Power Department, Rohit Kansal chaired a meeting of senior officers and exhorted them to ensure immediate restoration of full power supply to the Jammu region.
Addressing the officers, he warned that any laxity would invite action and that responsibility and accountability would be fixed for any delays or laxity and also for undue or unscheduled power outages.
"One fails to understand how VVIPs get the power supply 24x7 if they are dependent on the same system which is used to provide electricity to us," said an observer.
He said that Jammu has been facing the power crisis for the past more than a month, till date no one has been held accountable for the unscheduled power outages. "The recent warning to officials is nothing but an attempt to pacify people," the observer said.
It's in place to mention here that despite Delhi being much bigger in size than Jammu, the government provides 200 units of electricity free to the people and there are no power outages.
Meanwhile, voices to provide free electricity to people in Punjab too are becoming shriller. Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday pitched for providing up to 300 units of free electricity and round-the-clock power supply to consumers in the state.
Sidhu also demanded that domestic and industrial consumers should be given electricity at cheaper rates.
Another observer said, "In our neighbouring states like Punjab and Delhi people's situation is entirely different from Jammu. In Delhi electricity is free, while in Punjab similar discourse is coming to the fore."
"It's an irony that despite people of Jammu paying for each and every unit they consume, they don't get the electricity 24x7," he added.
