Even 2 years after scraping of Art 370, Tata group stays away from J&K | West Bengal Govt pleads Tata to return, J&K admin makes no attempt to convince big brands | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 21: For the past two years Jammu and Kashmir has been awaiting the advent of big business players into the newly carved out union territory, but till date no big brand has shown much interest to invest in J&K. When J&K’s special status was abrogated on August 5, 2019, at that point of time, the government had assured the people that business will get a boost as big houses are waiting to invest in the union territory. “We were told that Tata, Birla and other big business houses are ready to invest in J&K. The reason cited for these players for not investing in J&K was Article 370 as the outsiders were unable to buy land in erstwhile J&K State,” said a businessman. He said that after the scrapping of Article 370, “no big business house has invested in J&K but the jobs which were done by locals have been snatched by the outsiders,” the businessman added. It’s in place to mention here that the Trinamool Congress recently welcomed the Tata Group to make big investments in West Bengal, almost a decade after anti-land acquisition movement in Singur that prompted it to shift its proposed Nano car plant to Gujarat. Emphasising on the fact that the TMC never has any enmity with the Tatas, Bengal’s commerce and IT minister Partha Chatterjee said that Bengal is keen to attract new generation knowledge-driven industries like IT and ITES. An analyst said, “If Tata can return to West Bengal and invest there, why can’t the J&K Government convince Tata to come and invest in J&K. Everyday we hear announcements that the J&K has received investment proposal worth crores but it seems that these are just claims aimed at keeping people happy. The ground reality contradicts the claims which are made daily.” He said, “If J&K Government really wants Union Territory to prosper then it should work on the proposals that would attract big brands to invest in J&K. Mere announcements won’t help anyone’s cause.” |
