In Naya J&K, black sheep out to sabotage Raj Bhawan, nationalist journalism! | Babus punish Early Times for reporting on corruption, maladministration | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 4: For a region, which had been victim of over seven decades of alleged corruption and mis-governance mainly at the hands of dynasts, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha was supposed to give a major boost to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s vision of naya Jammu and Kashmir where the people were supposed to reap benefits of good governance. But even as J&K commemorates the second anniversary of the abrogation of the so called special status on Thursday -August 5, things haven’t been going much in line with the expectations. Rated among the most honest politicians in the country, Sinha had started his innings by declaring “zero tolerance” against corruption. But even as M-Tech by qualification, Sinha, continues to express his dynamism and commitment towards deliverance of good governance, alleged corruption and arrogance of a section of government officials continues to be a major impediment in the deliverance of the people-friendly administration. What is even shocking is that in naya Jammu and Kashmir, where the administration was supposed to be even accountable, a coterie of officials looks so averse to accountability that they have been making every effort to crush the Early Times, the Jammu based daily, which professionally contributes in strong-nation building. The message, which is being sent to this daily, overtly and covertly, is to simply stop writing about corruption and complaints of maladministration. Ironically, this is happening in the same Jammu and Kashmir where since the time of assuming charge, resolving public issues remained Sinha’s priority. In fact, the clash between New Delhi’s vision of new J&K and how a section of bureaucrats want the “legacy of corruption and misgovernance to continue” prompts the Early Times to report the reality so that the decision makers remain informed about the ground situation. And, this clash is quite visible in the administration. In September 2020, in a step towards making grievance redressal robust and efficient, the LG launched the Jammu and Kashmir Integrated Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (JK-IGRAMS). The revamped system had aimed at decentralizing the handling and redressal of public grievances by making district collectors and deputy commissioners the primary level of receiving, disposing and monitoring grievances. But what the City of Temples here recently witnessed was that over 550 grievances await redressal for months. Official documents confirmed this in the month of July 2021. In 2020, soon after taking over, Sinha visited a hospital in Srinagar, the Covid hotspot, when the first wave of the pandemic was at its peak and even officials would generally avoid visiting such places “lest they get infected” than to talk of any VIP visits then. Soon after the takeover, the Bharatiya Janta Party stalwart from Uttar Pradesh, also started his public outreach in Jammu from remote areas of Katra, which also houses the shrine of Shri Mata Vaishnu Devi. He has been paying obeisance at the revered shrine since. Sinha’s vision remained public good. But the administrative approach of some of the officials remained such that during the second wave of the pandemic in May this year, patients were seen gasping for oxygen outside the key hospitals in the winter capital of Jammu. And, the Early Times duly highlighted the public sufferings. For the pandemic-affected people, things improved only after Sinha personally visited the hospitals and opted for regular review meetings. While the Lieutenant Governor has been working hard for deliverance of good governance and people admire his leadership qualities, there seem to be some alleged blacksheep in the administration, who eye to sabotage his plans. The main reason for such “nefarious “ designs could be that such allegedly corrupt faces are allergic to accountability. In a bid to keep the LG informed about the muck in the system, the Early Times as a responsible media institution has been highlighting the wrongs so that New Delhi and Raj Bhawan take remedial measures in the larger interest of nation and people, alike. But the campaign against corruption, maladministration and anti-nationals doesn’t seem to be going down well with a few officials, who are trying their best to gag our voice. Knowing that the Covid lockdowns badly affected business activities world over, some officials want to crush us economically. Despite being a leading English daily from Jammu, we are being deprived of our share of government advertisements with the concerned sending us overt and covert messages that “unless the Early Times stops reporting about corruption and maladministration, the advertisements won’t be released.” Ours is a leading English daily operating from Jammu since 2003 and religiously writing against the terrorism as well. Ironically, the Early Times is being deprived of its genuine share of the advertisements, when have been on the hit-list of terror outfits who want this nationalist voice get silenced. The police are aware of the facts and thus registered cases. Apart from our fight against terror, the Early Times has been religiously exposing the sinister designs of the separatists and Pakistan, alike. Apart from all this, the misadventures of the dynasts have been on our focus. The Early Times upheld its mission to expose the dynasts even when they were at the helm. The previous regimes sealed our office and conspired to make us suffer on multiple fronts. But we went on, undeterred. At a time when, Raj Bhawan should appreciate our nationalist media policy of no mercy for anti-nationals or corruption, which goes much in line with the iconic slogan of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Na Khawunga Na Khane Dunga, efforts are on to choke the Early Times. Being the fourth pillar of democracy, we cannot afford to toe line with a coterie of alleged blacksheep in bureaucracy on issues, which can hamper our collective national interest of good governance and healthy democracy, alike. Hope the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha takes cognizance of the issue to end discrimination with this nationalist voice of Jammu and Kashmir. And being that voice, the Early Times will continue to tell the tale. Jai Hind! |
