‘Development works allotted to blue eyed contractors in Rajouri, Poonch’ | | | Rajesh Tandon
Early times Report
Poonch, July 22: The Public Works (Road and Building) Departments Rajouri and Poonch have allegedly been allotting development works to only a few blue eyed contractors leaving others eligible and unemployed in lurch. It has been alleged that no quality inspection is conducted by the department of the works executed by the contractors and despite a number of the complaints about poor quality of roads and shockingly the payments of these works is cleared easily due to proximity with senior officials. Sources informed that the contractors even don’t spend 50% of the actual amount sanctioned for the work which resulted in poor quality of work. “The recent incident at GMC Hospital, when the retaining wall of the hospital collapsed after rainfall. Similarly the roads in villages under PMGSY don’t stay for long wasting public money. Even since the BJP backed administration has taken over the JK UT, the quality of developmental works has been compromised,” they alleged. A few spells of rainfall have exposed the quality of the work despite the fact that the rainy season is still left. The local contractors who want to work seriously are ignored by the department and some favourite contractors are given work. “There is no transparency in allotment of work. The Government should adopt people-friendly procedures so that most of the contractors might be allotted work,” they informed. They appealed to the LG for initiating the inspection process so that quality of works executed by the contractors who are very close to the senior officials of the department might be exposed. When Early Times contacted the Executive Engineer PWD, he initially didn’t respond to the calls and later said that he was busy in a meeting. Meanwhile, when Superintending Engineer PWD was contacted, he said that he had received objections and he had sought reports from the XEn. |
