Constructions on agriculture land demolished; authorities target only ‘poor’, allege locals | | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report
Anantnag, Aug 28: Demolition drive carried out by the authorities to demolish commercial structures coming up on agricultural land along Anantnag-Srinagar Highway (old) has upset local residents who allege that ‘only poor were being targeted’. “The authorities are carrying out selective demolition drives. A tin-shed constructed by a local resident was demolished, however a huge commercial building being built near the spot wasn’t even touched,” a group of residents told Early Times at Batengoo. They said that the authorities were targeting only the poor and exonerating the rich and influential by allowing them to continue. A resident claimed that influential and rich influence the authorities and at times to prevent any action against them. Tehsildar Anantnag, Umar Gul (KAS) told Early Times that they have stopped work on the commercial structure last week. “I’ll be visiting again to see whether any fresh work is being carried out. If it’s so same shall be demolished without any fear and favor,” he replied to the text messages from this correspondent. Pertinently, under Section 133 of land Revenue Act, the conversion of agricultural land for commercial or other purposes is prohibited. Revenue officials are also authorized to invoked Section 133-C of Land Revenue Act, which reads as, “Any land converted for other purposes in violation of the provisions of section133-A, or section 133-B or 133-BB shall escheat to the Government” Last month, The Assistant Commissioner Anantnag Syed Yasir Farooq (KAS) directed Tehsildar Anantnag to act against the violators following which several structures were demolished. |
