Babus maligning Amit Shah’s image, focus on Kashmir apple, forget damaged Jammu Basmati | Discrimination | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 26: Even as the recent western disturbances proved devastative for the crops in Jammu and Kashmir, the administration seems more focused for damage assessment in Kashmir alone, the victims have alleged. While the world famous Basmati crop cultivated in RS Pura sector of Jammu witnessed largescale devastation, the affected farmers said the administration doesn’t seem to be concerned to provide them respite in a timely manner. On the other hand, whereas apple crop was devastated in south Kashmir areas like Shopian due to snowfall, the government instantly started damage assessment. The director General of the horticulture started his visit of the affected areas when the snowfall was already going on and the administration circulated pictures of the survey assuring of relief to the fruit growers. Officials said the survey was being done for damage assessment to provide financial relief for the fruit growers. The Advisor to Raj Bhawan also sought immediate survey for damage assessment of fruit crop in Kashmir. But such a priority doesn’t seem to be for the Basmati and other crops damaged in Jammu region due to hailstorm during the same time around when unprecedented snowfall struck Kashmir. It’s pertinent to mention that torrential rains and hailstorm destroyed crops, other agriculture produce standing in fields in several thousand hectares in the winter capital region. Reports said in Jammu province, paddy crop, particularly the highly grade Basmati varieties standing in thousands of hectares, and vegetables and its seedlings for crops like onion, potato, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and collards got damaged. As per market reports, the badly affected areas are Ranbir Singh Pura, Bishnah, Samba, Ramgarh, Marh and Kathua. Orange and Kinnu crop is also believed to be badly affected. “Why are their two yardsticks for Jammu and Kashmir regions even for assessment due to weather calamity? Who is supposed to compensate our losses and when?” asked a delegation of farmers from RS Pura area. A senior official however refuted any discrimination with Jammu. He said Director Agriculture Jammu flanked by other officials have started inspection. |
