J&K Birdlife celebrates 125th birthday Dr Salim Ali | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 12: An awareness programme held today on the birth anniversary of Dr Salim Ali at University of Jammu in the presence of OP Vidyarthi, Col (retd) Romesh Slathia, Prof Yashpal Sharma, Dilip Koul and other members of J&K Birdlife. On this occasion under the banner of J&K Birdlife, the members of group and members of Civil Society gathered to commemorate the 125th Birthday of Great Salim Ali, an Indian Ornithologist and Naturalist. Dr Parmil Kumar while speaking on the occasion shared that Dr Salim Ali was the first Indian to conduct systematic bird surveys across India and wrote several bird books that popularized ornithology in India. For his contribution, he was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 1958 and Padma Vibushan in 1976. Several bird sanctuaries and institutions have been named after him. OP Vidyarthi, delivered the memorial talk on Salim Ali and paid floral tribute to the bird man of India. He appreciated the LG, UT of J&K for declaring Kalij Pheasant as the State bird as this bird is related to folk of the UT and need protection being hunted. Sachin Kumar Bhagat conducted a quiz competition on the Kalij Pheasant in which all the members actively participated. Parvez Shagoo on this occasion shared his experience about the avian diversity of the state. He being associated with State Bio-diversity council informed the participants that efforts and process has been streamlined to protect the bio-diversity of the state. Sudesh Kumar read the Bird Pledge and all members took the pledge to protect and conserve the avian diversity of the State. At the end, Advocate Vishal Kapur thanked all the members for gracing the occasion specially Yatin Kumar and Shewait Khajuria in organizing the event. The students of department of Statistics, University of Jammu too participated in the event. The celebrations ended with a message that 12th November will not just be remembered as the birth anniversary of The Bird Man of India but will be celebrated as a symbol for present and future generation for awareness towards the birds of mother nature. |
