NHIDCL achieves breakthrough in Zojila Tunnel project, execution picks up pace | | | Saahil Suhail

Srinagar, Nov 11: The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) which is executing strategically important Z-Morh and Zojila tunnels on the Srinagar-Leh highway, has achieved breakthrough of Zojila tunnel by completing the tunneling. The breakthrough of Zojila tunnel, NHIDCL said was achieved last week on the auspicious occasion of Deepwali. “NHIDCL have been given the task of constructing two tubes of Zojila tunnel and today is very historic day for us as we achieved breakthrough in one of the tubes of this tunnel,” Executive Director NHIDCL, Gurjeet Kambo said. He said that this tunnel can be used during emergencies. “This year we can use this tunnel for emergency movement during winters,” he added. Executive Director said that NHIDCL was hopeful to complete it next 1.5 years and will be handed over to National Highway Authority of India. The NHIDCL said that breakthrough boosted the morale and work is picking up pace despite harsh climatic conditions. 14.5 Km long Zojila tunnel, once completed, will be India’s longest road tunnel, and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel. This tunnel will reduce travel time between Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh besides will ensure round the year movement of traffic Srinagar-Leh highway which currently isn’t happening. The project cost of the Z-Morh tunnel is Rs 2,300 crore and that of the Zojila tunnel is Rs 4,600 crore. |
