No respite in freezing cold ahead of downpour in Kashmir on Dec 4

Srinagar, Dec 3: There is no respite from the intense cold conditions in Kashmir valley as the mercury continues sliding down to freezing point ahead of down pour predicted by the MET centre from evening December 4 onwards.
Cold wave conditions intensified in Srinagar again which experienced the coldest night with minus 2.4 degree Celsius on Friday against the minus 1.8 degree Celsius a day ago.
Meanwhile, a MET office Srinagar suggests a fresh Western Disturbance is most likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas from evening December 4 to December 6 afternoon. It said on December 5 widespread light to moderate snowfall in middle and higher reaches of Kashmir valley and Jammu region and light snowfall and rain over plains would occur in Union Territory.
The tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir was the coldest place in Kashmir valley, although there was a slight improvement in night temperature was recorded as minus 4.1 degree celsius against minus 4.2 degree Celsius the previous day.
Ladakh Union Territory continue in grip of intense cold and temperature at Air Force station of Drass further dipped to minus 12.9 degree Celsius against the minus 11.8 degree celsius on Thursday, while at Leh it was recorded at minus 6.9 degree Celsius against the -6.3 degree celsius and at Kargil it was recorded at minus 7.1 degree celsius against the minus 7.9 degree Celsius a day ago.
The famous Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, showing a slight improvement in the night temperature, was recorded at minus 1.0 degree Celsius against the 1.5 degree Celsius. However, freezing cold conditions with a thick fog, making the movement of tourists staying there difficult.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was recorded at minus 1.8 degree Celsius against the minus 1.5 degree recorded yesterday, while Kokernag night temperature plunged to minus 2.3 degree Celsius against the minus 1.4 degree Celsius a day ago.
In frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara, the minimum temperature slightly improved and was recorded at minus 2.8 degree Celsius against the minus 3.3 degree Celsius the previous day, the MeT office said.
