IS alert sounded in Kashmir! | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 3: An alert has been sounded in Kashmir in the wake of inputs that the Islamic State based in Syria could be behind the attack on traffic cop in Srinagar on Wednesday. Sources said the government agencies have inputs that the Islamic State could be trying to create its base in Kashmir, a development which has set the alarm bells ringing. On December 1, the unarmed traffic cop was fired from point blank range on the fateful evening in Gojwara area of old City when he was manning vehicular movement in the area. The wounded cop is undergoing treatment. Officials said it was first such attack in Kashmir in the recent years where a traffic policeman had been attacked. It’s pertinent to mention that the same downtown in the past few years before the abrogation of the so called special status of Jammu and Kashmir would witness protesters carrying the Islamic State flag. Sources said in the wake of the attack, the Director General of Police Dilbag Singh on December 3 chaired a high level meeting at police control room in Srinagar. The meeting, which is believed to have been attended by other senior officials, is understood to have discussed the “IS” angle in particular. Sources said a high level probe was ordered into incident. In the last two months, Kashmir has witnessed a spike in “target killings.” While the police recently said that the militants behind the attacks have been killed, the recent attack on the unarmed cop has again put the forces on tenterhooks. Sources said the preliminary investigations into the attack have found links in Pakistan. “They(Pakistan) are responsible for such deadly conspiracies and things will be made public soon at a media conference,” said a source. New Delhi has recently warned Pakistan to refrain from sponsoring terror into the Indian territory. |
