Shocking Act | | | A mother of three children allegedly beaten by her husband and his six relatives in Doda district is undergoing treatment in a hospital and is waiting for the Police to arrest the accused. The incident has sent shockwaves across the Jammu region. It has once again brought to fore the ugly face of domestic violence that women face, some cases get reported while many go unnoticed. The recent report released by the National Crime Record Bureau had revealed that crimes against women across the country have increased by about 11 percent from 2019 to 2020. Majority of cases under crime against women under Indian Penal Code (IPC) or Special Local Laws (SLL) were registered under ‘Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives’, ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’, ‘Kidnapping & Abduction of Women’ and ‘Rape’, etc. It’s unfortunate that women after getting married become instruments in the hands of their husbands and in-laws. In many cases these victims don’t open their mouths and face atrocities silently. Women in most cases keep quiet till these victims are pushed to a brink. Men need to introspect and change themselves. They have to understand that women are not the instruments and they deserve respect and care. The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 which came into effect in October 2006 defines domestic violence as any act, omission or commission that causes injury to a woman’s physical or mental health and includes specific forms of violence such as physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and economic abuse. The Act seeks to provide relief to women in the form of protection order, residence order, monetary relief, custody order and compensation orders. Breach of any protection order is a criminal offence. Authorities needed to act fast. The NCRB every year releases its report on crime against women. After figures are made public these are discussed and deliberated upon in the media and then they are forgotten. This trend needs to change. People should realize that no civilized society permits crimes against women. The Doda woman hospitalized after being assaulted by her husband and her in-laws is just a tip of an iceberg. Many such cases occur on a daily basis across the Union Territory but are not reported. It’s the collective responsibility of the society to wake up and raise its voice against injustice being faced by the women folk. |
