All J&K parties must join hands for restoration of statehood, revival of democracy | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 10: JAMMU, Dec 10: Appealing the secular, democratic and nationalist parties to join hands for restoration of statehood and return of popular government in J&K, Harsh Dev Singh, Chairman JKNPP said that it was high time that centre's hegemony comes to an end in the administrative affairs of the erstwhile state. "With the oldest state of J&K having been dismantled and reduced in rank and further deprived of an elected government it was the common masses who were being made to suffer and to bear the brunt of an authoritarian regime. The demotion of state to UT level had not only hurt the collective sentiment of the people but deprived them of their legitimate civil and democratic rights. Seeking a collective fight at least on the issues of common interest," said Singh while addressing a press conference here. Singh suggested a joint dharna by various political parties outside Parliament for realizing the common goals and objectives often spelt out by various social and political organizations. He said that the BJP government had all along been assuring 'early' return of statehood to J&K without spelling out the exact duration of the term 'early'. During its recent statements, however it had taken the stand of restoring statehood after elections which were to be conducted after completion of the process of delimitation. "The centre was neither interested in early delimitation nor assembly elections in J&K or restoration of statehood to it. It was therefore imperative that political parties joined hands for revival of democracy in J&K and realization of the constitutional guarantees which were being denied to the people of the erstwhile state," said Singh. Maintaining that a legitimate, elected government was the only solution to the ills afflicting J&K, Singh questioned the prolonged proxy rule of centre in the erstwhile state. He called for an end to proxy rule in J&K and early restoration of democracy in the erstwhile state. The elected representatives alone could appreciate the concerns of the public as against the outside bureaucrats who hardly had any accountability to the people. Singh sought early assembly elections in J&K so as to address the concerns of various aspirational groups of the erstwhile state. |
