Rhetoric won’t end corruption | | | Several measures taken to curb corruption in Jammu and Kashmir have not produced the desired results. Whosoever ruled J&K in the past always claimed that a crusade against corruption has been launched and corrupt won’t be spared. The present dispensation is also claiming the same and has been beating the trumpet about having wiped out the corruption from the system completely. But these claims are confined to papers only as the ground situation hasn’t changed. Various measures that the government was mulling to take for making administration transparent seem to have hit a roadblock. The digitization of revenue records hasn’t commenced at the level at which it was expected to start. Revenue records becoming online are still a distant dream. Another proposal of the government to install CCTVs in the government offices to monitor the activities of the employees is gathering dust as nothing much has been done in this regard till date. Everyday people are told that one or other things is being done to eradicate the menace of corruption and the system has been made vibrant, but the reports emanating from the ground puncture these tall claims and prove it beyond doubt that graft continues to rule the roost in the government offices. People were of the opinion that J&K’s transition into a Union Territory would prove to be a major step towards ending corruption but it hasn’t happened. During the past two years anti-graft agencies in J&K have been given more teeth. These agencies have acted swiftly and have acted tough but still a lot needs to be done. The helmsmen need to understand that just making statements won’t help anyone’s cause. The words have to be translated into actions to make everyone from top to bottom accountable. Catching small fishes won’t end corruption. The action needs to be taken against the people who believe that they are invincible. The black sheep who are not allowing the things to fall at place need to be identified and kept away from the system. J&K during the past 70-years has witnessed massive corruption. It’s high time for it to end. The corruption is deep rooted in the system and it seems it won’t end till the revolutionary steps are taken. The helmsmen need to go beyond rhetoric to end the culture of corruption in J&K. |
