Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 12: Former J&K chief minister and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah on Sunday said that the government is using newspapers in the union territory as instruments of propaganda. Addressing a gathering here, Omar said, “Prior to August 5, 2019, the local newspapers in J&K used to report the truth fearlessly. Headlines of the papers used to shake the rulers. Today you won’t find anything except government press notes in these newspapers. These are filled with the news items like so and so officers cut a ribbon here, had tea somewhere and took a meeting.” Omar said, “I don’t blame newspaper owners or editors for carrying such news items. Had they been to be blamed I would have criticized them. But I know that if they report the truth they will end up in a jail as in today’s era anyone who speaks the truth will be punished.” He said, “If these newspapers dare to report the truth their advertisements are blocked and they are harassed or the editors are asked to report in one or other police station to record their attendance.” Omar said, “Ground situation has worsened after August 5, 2019 and the areas that were made militancy free during political regimes are seeing a resurgence of guns.” He said, “The development projects which the present government is trumpeting about were started by the former regimes and there is nothing new which one can say has come up in the past two and a half years.” |
