DC Srinagar, traffic officials initiate move to deal with traffic jams in Srinagar
12/15/2021 10:13:01 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Dec 15: To ensure smooth traffic flow on roads without jam, district authorities and traffic police initiated a drive to augment sense of traffic and civic rule among the drivers in Srinagar.
Deputy Commissioner Aijaz Asad along with traffic police officials visited various routes to mobilize the traffic and passage to ambulances carrying sick patients on Srinagar routes.
He directed all drivers plying passenger vehicles to drop and pick up passengers only at the designated bus stops in Srinagar to avoid traffic jams.
Traffic police officials challaned many mini bus drivers on the spot at Jahangir Chowk in Srinagar for stopping their vehicles in the middle of the road to pick up the passengers.
Deputy Commissioner said for the past few days complaints from the public on frequent traffic jams on Srinagar roads causing numerous problems. He said a strict initiative has been taken to mobilize the traffic movement on the roads.
"We have directed all mini bus drivers to ensure they will not pick up or drop the passengers in the middle of the road which often causes traffic jams,'' he said and added "only on designated bus stops the drivers should drop or pick up the passengers".
He also directed that Ambulances carrying sick patients and need to reach respective hospitals should be given a free corridor without any hurdle. " Need of the hour is to develop drive and civil sense among the people so that the menace of traffic jams could be redressed", he added.
In reply to a question Deputy Commissioner said "Srinagar roads have sufficient width as compared to others and no excuses should be made for the cause of traffic jams".
He said traffic police cannot single handedly stop the traffic jam. They can regulate the traffic but people have to develop driving and civic sense to get rid of this phenomenon.
"There are some bottlenecks and sharp edges where often traffic jams cause inconvenience to the public only due to the mini bus drivers picking up and dropping passengers at these places," he said. Drop the passengers only at designated bus stops to ensure smooth flow of traffic on roads, the Deputy Commissioner added.
He assured that people, who are facing tremendous problems during the evening time in getting transport facilities to reach their destinations, would be soon addressed. "We have taken up the matter with the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) for buses during the evening time in Srinagar", he said.
