Project to restore glory of India’s oldest railway at Jammu dropped; Transport Deptt refuses NOC
12/15/2021 11:15:42 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 15: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has abandoned the dream and visionary project of restoring India’s oldest railway station at Jammu due to the failure of the authorities to get the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Transport Department.
In June this year, the Jammu and Kashmir Government had announced to preserve India’s oldest railway station as a “heritage structure” to restore the glorious past.
Important remnants of the 124-year-old pre-partition railway station, situated at Bikram Chowk Jammu, are still available, though in shambles so authorities had announced to preserve the same.
The railway station was built in 1897 but was abandoned after the partition as the railway link to Sialkot was broken.
The Jammu-Sialkot rail section was the only railway link that the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir had before the partition of the country and was thereafter permanently shut after drawing of borders between two countries.
The 11th Board of Directors meeting of Jammu Smart City Limited held at Jammu on Tuesday decided to drop the proposals for complete street development of Janipur road and Heritage Railway Stations as one is coming under the alignment of proposed Metrolite project and second due to non-issuance of NOC by the Transport Department. The Trikuta Nagar canal project was also dropped as it is also coming in the alignment of the Metrolite project.
Shockingly authorities have given reason for dropping Heritage Railway Stations projects due to the non-issuance of NOC by the Transport Department which is also part of the government.
In June this year, the government had directed the concerned officers to go through the pictures available of the historic railway station as it had existed earlier to restore its pristine glory.
It was also directed to the revenue officers to conduct demarcation exercises and submit complete reports along with survey numbers involved, land titles, and other revenue details.
It was also directed to the concerned to take drone shots of the station and mark the buildings, area which could be renovated.
The Tourism department and Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL) were directed to make a project report (proposal) for the renovation of the railway station including all the important components of the project.
