RARS, SKUAST-J organise farmers' awareness program

RAJOURI, Dec 16: In connection with Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav, Agro meteorology Field Unit of Regional Agricultural Research Station, SKUAST -Jammu today organized one day farmer awareness programme on "Weather, Climate and Farmers" to minimize weather risk in Agricultural Planning at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Rajouri under Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa (GKMS) services rendered by India Meteorological Department (IMD). The programme was organized under the aegis of SKUAST - J Vice-Chancellor, Prof. J. P. Sharma and guidance of Dr. Pradeep Wali, Director Research, SKUAST-J.
The main objective of the programme was to help our farmers to manage weather related uncertainties in day to day agricultural activities. The proceedings of the programme was started by Dr. Rohit Sharma (Technical Officer, Agro-meteorology). He gave detailed information on role of medium range weather forecast in agricultural crops under hilly conditions of J&K.
He highlighted the use of weather and climate based agro-advisories in day to day agriculture activities and stressed upon the farmers to make more and more utilization of GKMS services and motivated the farmers to take maximum benefit from this programme as well as the services provided by AMFU, RARS, Rajouri.
Dr. Vikas Sharma, Incharge, RARS, Rajouri, highlighted the importance of organizing this programme to sensitize the farmers of hilly region about weather and climate information and its applications in their farm operations. He focused on use of natural resources for better management of rabi crops in the area.
Dr. Arvind Ishar, Incharge, KVK -Rajouri interacted with the farmers and provided the information regarding integrated insect pest management in rabi crops. He emphasized upon the farming community to adopt improved/modern technologies like agro advisory services and mechanized/customized farming systems, etc. to improve the livelihood of the people of the area.
Dr. Parul Gupta (SMS, Animal Science) discussed new technologies like silage making, multi nutrient block supplementation for increasing milk production during winter season.
Jyoti Parsad, SMS, Deptt. of Horticulture also interacted with the farmers and stressed them to make more and more utilization of Gramin Krishi Mausam Services. Dr. Suraj Kumar (SMS, KVK-Rajouri) and Dr. Rajesh Kumar (Scientist, RARS-Rajouri) contributed towards the successful organization of this programme.
Lokesh Sharma, Agromet Observer presented the vote of thanks to the farmers.
