Open loot of green gold in Marwah forest division of Kishtwar | | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Early Times Report
KISHTWAR, Dec 16: Due to non-availability of proper roads and communication, Marwah and Warwan areas of Kishtwar District have not only become the hub of corruption, but the forest officials and forest smugglers nexus are now eating the vital assets through open loot of green gold in compartment No. 27, 28, 29 & 30 in Warwan falling under the control of Forest Division Marwah. Video and photographic evidences available with Early Times point out that massive green felling could be seen in the area which has already suffered on account of the forest destruction due to construction of dozens of roads under PMGSY in the area in recent past wherein thousands of trees were cut to pay way for construction of roads - which perhaps are needed in the area since the area is hilly and mostly remained cut off from the rest of the world. Speaking to Early Times a whistleblower (name withheld) informed that the green felling is common factor in the area which could not be possible without the involvement of the forest officials adding that as and when tried to bring the matter into the notice of forest officials their names were leaked in a systematic manner and thus put the life of the of the people who intended to save the precious forest cover at risk beside same could lead to feud between the families of those involved in forest loot and the families of the whistleblower. Early Times in the month of June earlier this year also highlighted the issues of open loot of green gold in Marwah and Warwan forest areas, but despite assurances from the officials at the helm of the affair, nothing was done to save the forests and instead a long feud was witnessed between the officials of the department as well as some local families of the area who was blamed for sharing the information with the Early Times. Top officials assured action against the culprits involved in open loot of green gold in Marwah Forest Division. Similar reports of open loot of green gold were received from Thakrie area of Doda Forest Division. |
