Skill development workshop organized by Government Degree College Kathua

KATHUA, Dec 18: One-day skill development workshop was organized by the Department of Home Science of Government Degree College, Kathua on processing and value addition of fruits and vegetables in collaboration with FST Division, SKUAST, Kashmir. The main objective of the workshop was to acquaint the students of the Department of Home Science about the processing and value addition to enhance their skills for entrepreneurship development.
The workshop was attended by more than 100 students who were sensitized about the importance of nutrition and entrepreneurship development. Prof. Vishav Deepika, HoD (Home Science) formally welcomed the Chief Guest of the workshop, Prof. Raj Kiran Sharma, Principal, GDC Kathua and experts from FST Division of SKUAST- Kashmir Dr. Afsah Iqbal Nahvi, Dr. Quarazah Akeemu Amin.
A presentation on entrepreneurship development was given by Dr. Afsah, Associate Professor Division of FST, SKUAST-K. She discussed about the importance of green leafy vegetables and intake of fruits and dry fruits in daily diet. Dr. Quarazah, Assistant Professor, FST Division, SKUAST-K presented another talk on scope, constraints and future of baking industry in India. After the presentations, a hands-on demonstration cum training session was crried out by Dr. Afsah, Dr. Quarazah and Mr. Waseem Qazi in which they demonstrated about processing of fruits and vegetables for value addition by making Pickels and Jams in the Home Science Lab.
Dr. Ruchi Thakur, Lecturer of Home Science co-coordinated the workshop. She briefed the students regarding benefits of value addition and discussed the role of nutrients, vitamins, minerals in balanced diet. Kusum Lata and Veena (Teaching Assistants from Home Sc. Deptt.) also assisted the team from SKUAST-K during the hands-on training session. Prof. Neha Mahajan, HOD Biotechnology & Kaurab Singh, Asst. Professor of Biotechnology & Coordinator, Food Technology Skill Lab were also instrumental in the successful conduct of this workshop.
