JAMMU, Dec 19: Dr. Pradeep Wali Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu along with K.R.Sharma Director Agriculture, Ram Savak Director Horticulture and Rajinder Singh Director Command along with other officials visited Gargal and Godhan villages and interacted with beneficiaries of DST-SEED, New Delhi funded Project on "Demonstration of technologies for improving the productivity of rainfed area in Jammu district" on Sunday.
Dr. Pradeep Wali Director Research informed the gathering about the different activities and success stories of the concluded project. Dr. R.K. Srivastava, Principal Investigator of the project briefed about activities done under the project which was concluded on March 2021. The basic objectives of the project were to demonstrate soil and water conservation technologies at farmers' fields and thereby improving livelihood in rainfed areas through crop diversifications. Under this project different soil and water conservation structures like poly tanks, percolation tanks, recharging pits, earthen embankment, woven wire stone-filled check dam, gabions, roof water harvesting system, contour /compartmental bunding, continuous contour trenching, and bench terracing systems were constructed at the project site. A portable sprinkler unit and gravity feed irrigation system were also installed at the project site for improving water use efficiency. During the interaction, beneficiaries shared their experience and were informed about beginning vegetable cultivation in their field and kitchen garden due to the availability of water through technological interventions of the project.
K.K. Sharma, Director Agriculture Ram Savak Director Horticulture, and Rajinder Singh Director Command interacted with the beneficiaries and appreciated farmers for initiating vegetable cultivation using water harvesting through poly tank and roof water harvesting system. All were in the opinion to replicate similar soil and water conservation technologies in other villages of kandi area by Department of Agriculture, Horticulture, Command Area with the possible inclusion of department of rural development through different centrally sponsored schemes. They have also suggested to farmers to practice horticulture cultivation and other schemes for initiating processing units for horticultural produce. Dr. Vijay Bharti, Senior Scientist/ Co-PI, Dr. Sushmita M.Dadhich, Assistant Professor/Co-PI of the project and other officers of the Department of Agriculture/Horticulture and Command area were also present during the field visit.
