Chenab Valley: Electricity crises worsen in power generation hub | | | Asif Iqbal Naik Early Times Report
Kishtwar, Dec 19: The electricity crises in power generation hub, Chenab Valley, has worsened due to the continuous strike of Power Development Department employees. The striking employees are demanding that the decision to create a joint venture by merging it with Power Grid of India should be rolled back. Speaking to Early Times, the people said that their patience is running out as they have not seen the electricity for the past two days. “It’s taking a heavy toll on the students and is affecting their studies. No electricity has added to the woes of people in biting cold conditions,” they said. “Many patients at home are suffering due to non availability of electricity- mostly elders” said a local slamming the government for planning to privatise the electricity that will put extra burden on the people through huge tariffs. “Chenab Valley produces around 2000 MW power which is supplied to different parts of the country. The Valley will generate 4000 more MWs of power in coming years despite that residents are suffering,” said Shakir Siddiqui, local social activist. Residents said Chenab belt- mostly Doda and Kishtwar districts suffer every year in winter as regular faults in 132 KV Udhampur-Kishtwar transmission line are a routine during this season. “We heard about a double circuit transmission line from Ramban to connect Doda and Kishtwar- the work started on this project in 2007 and even after 14 years — it is still incomplete” said Wasil Doolwal. Doolwal said that due to lack of proper planning, Kishtwar and Doda Districts are worse hit during winters. He said that people and political parties must unite to put pressure on the government to connect Kishtwar and Doda District with 390 MW Dool-Hasti power projects. The agitating employees of the Power Department said that they don’t want to get into confrontation with the people and the government. “We can understand the pain and sufferings of people. We were forced to go on a strike due to the failed government policies.” “The government should rectify the mistakes by addressing our genuine concerns and demands so that we can resume our work at an earliest,” they added. |
