Vital road caves in at Rajpura, Sarpanch seeks probe | PWD under scanner again | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 19: Public Works Department (PWD) has come under scanner once again as the sub-standard material used by a contractor has led to a vital road caving in at Rajpura in Samba district. According to the locals, crores were spent to construct this vital road in the frontier area. “The use of substandard material is clearly visible and it shows the lackadaisical attitude of the PWD and the contractor who was assigned the job to build this vital road.” Sarpanch of the area said, “We were without a bridge since 1947. However, it was built and people heaved a sigh of relief but the road leading to the bridge caving in has put a question mark on the quality of material used for constructing the bridge.” He said, “The PWD officers who cleared the bill of the contractor should be held accountable. The money which has been spent on the road and the bridge is public money and they cannot just distribute it without even checking the quality of work.” The Sarpanch urged Deputy Commissioner Samba to order an inquiry into the construction of this road and seek an explanation from the department about how a metalled road collapsed. “It seems the base of the road was weak and no effort has been put in to make its base firm,” he added. |
