SPF demands early elections of DGPCs of JK UT
12/27/2021 10:33:29 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 27: Sikh Progressive Front (SPF) and various other Sikh organizations stated that the J&K government is not serious about conducting DGPC elections, which have not been held since July 7, 2020 in the Union Territory.
Addressing a press conference here today, SPF leaders said that the J&K govt is delaying it on one pretext or the other including Covid pandemic. It is pertinent to mention that elections and by elections are held in number of states like Assam, Himachal, Tamil Nadu & West Bengal and also election in five more states, particularly in the State of UP & Punjab are going to held soon. Especially in UP which is, the most populated State of India, mass rallies are being held in violation of the Covid protocols. So delaying Gurudwara elections in JK UT on the pretext of corona pandemic seems an unjustified excuse.
So the SPF along with other Sikh bodies stressed upon the govt to hold time bound elections instead of nomination. But if the atmosphere is not conducive for holding elections and it is inevitable, as per government version, to hold election then nominate the Committee of all Districts of JK UT to run the affairs of Gurudwaras of JK UT under Section 63-C of J&K Gurudwara & Endowment Act 1973 and its rules of 1975 till the elections are held. All present there in the Press Conference urged upon the Govt to clarify the "criteria and mechanism for selection of such members".
As High Court has clearly stated that the nomination of such persons should be of high integrity and should be led by some retired District & Session Judge or an officer serving or retired, of the rank of not less than Additional Magistrate.
Furthermore all present representative of different Sikh organization are also of the view that instead of creating confusion and division among the Sikh Society let the old Committees manage Gurdwara Affairs till the elections are held. As it is feared that some vested interest people are bent upon to take hold of the Gurudwara affairs which can cause unrest among the Sikh community, so we urge upon the JK UT Administration to adopt free fair and transparent mechanism for nomination if the atmosphere is not conducive, as per govt, for holding elections.
All those prominent Sikh leaders present in the Press Conference include Balvinder Singh Prseident SPF, Manjit Singh Gen Sec, Makhan Singh, Retd DSP & Sr Sikh Leader, Babu Singh President Kashmir Sikh Sangat, Sewa Singh, Paramjit Singh President Maanav Welfare Society. Jatinder Singh Chairman Cantonment Board, Sharanjit Singh, Surinder Singh SPF, Rajinder Singh SPF, Janak Singh, Iqbal Singh and Nirman Singh.
