2021, a year of shattered hopes for Jammu youth | Unemployment rate in UT touches 21.6%; highest in India | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 27: Notwithstanding tall claims of the present regime, the year 2021 will be remembered as a year of shattered hopes, snatching livelihoods for the educated unemployed youth of Jammu and Kashmir in general and Jammu province in particular. Except for promises nothing has been done for the unemployed youth of Jammu where the unemployment rate is increasing with every passing day. While the present regime has failed to protect job rights for local youth, Jammu is witnessing brain drain as a large number of qualified youth of this region have shifted to other parts of the country to earn their livelihood. A large number of unemployed youth are doing work of labourers in different parts of the country, those who have professional degrees have also shifted outside Jammu because the present regime has failed to create job opportunities for them. What to say of unemployed youth, even some businessmen have also shifted outside J&K after the present regime took some decisions which were against traders. The recent report of the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) has exposed all claims of the present regime to create job opportunities for youth of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the CMIE reports, J&K has a 21.6 percent unemployment rate, which is the worst among states/Union Territories in India. The unemployment rates are produced by CMIE using its Consumer Pyramids Household Survey machinery. CMIE has pegged India’s unemployment rate at 6.9 percent which means J&K has a much higher unemployment rate than the national average. According to the CMIE data, the unemployment rate in J&K has jumped from over 13 percent in August 2021 to 21.6 percent in September. As per the official data, J&K is the only region in India that has an over 20 percent unemployment rate. Other states, which follow J&K in terms of the highest unemployment, are Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Tripura where the unemployment rate is above 15 percent. Besides these official figures, other data sources indicate the severity of unemployment in J&K. For example, the employment registration carried out by the Directorate of Employment last year witnessed 3 lakh registrations by postgraduates and PhD degree holders. |
