As locals cry for basic amenities, JK admin seeks Dubai tourism | Kaar Khaan Nu Ni, Amma Peen Gai Hai! | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 10: Even as the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been complaining of allegedly poor civic amenities, especially in the wake of recent red weather warning in the union territory, the officials are busy seeking tourism from Dubai. The Metrological Department in the national capital had recently issued a red weather warning for Jammu and Kashmir. While people seek restoration of the road connectivity, power and water supplies in the wake of the bad weather, the officials who were on a tour of Dubai have been “talking tall about the state of the art facilities in J&K.” As per an official handout, at the ongoing Dubai EXPO-2020, the Department of Tourism has pitched strongly for promoting the potential of Jammu & Kashmir as the unparallel and all season destination in the country. Making a case for the tourism potential of Jammu & Kashmir, a top official during a presentation before the delegates of the Expo highlighted the salient features, seasonal differentiations and attractions of tourism products offered in the Union Territory. As per the handout, the official also shared with them the activities undertaken by the stakeholders and the Department over the past year or so besides the capacity building measures, vaccination drives and other steps taken by the J&K administration for making J&K tourism safer and more attractive to international travellors and tourists. “In a series of B2B meetings, the Tourism Secretary enumerated the initiatives taken by the Tourism Department to further broaden the spectrum of tourism products in J&K. He specifically mentioned projection of 75 lesser known and offbeat destinations, giving more push to adventure activities like trekking, skiing, rafting etc. and making a combo of cuisine, heritage and culture for retaining varied categories of tourists,” the official handout said. But when the officials were speaking in Dubai, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted about problems faced by people back home. “Very heavy snowfall in Noorabad. Roads completely blocked, patients suffering. Request the district administration to start the clearance process as soon as possible.,” Omar Abdullah retweeted. A senior leader of the Peoples Conference in a social media post said that people were craving for a glass of water as the supplies were affected. Ironically, when the Dubai meetings were being held many of the areas were reeling under darkness due to power breakdown in the wake of bad weather in J&K. As about the historic Jammu City, the much-awaited artificial lake on Tawi is yet to see the light of the day despite missing several deadlines over the years. The winter capital had to bear the brunt of second wave of Covid with “record mortality and infected gasping for oxygen due to poor infrastructure.” “This is height of callousness that when people crave for basic amenities, the administration is talking about Dubai,” said a Jammuite teaching at Jammu University on the condition of anonymity. The government, however, has been saying that life is back to normal in J&K. |
