NC assails police action against unemployed; demands safeguard to jobs for permanent residents | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 9: National Conference today assailed the police action against the aspirant of Border Police Battalion particularly the girls on Tawi Bridge, saying that instead of addressing the burgeoning unemployment problem the administration is resorting to suppression. "The educated girls and boys want jobs and deserve compassion, not the lathis", Provincial President Rattan Lal Gupta said while felicitating the new women functionaries of NC District Women Wing Ramban at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan here this afternoon. Provincial President Women Wing Jammu Satwant Kour Dogra announced the names of the functionaries duly approved by the Provincial President Jammu Province Mr Rattan Lal Gupta. Rattan Lal Gupta described the demands of the unemployed youth as justified on the ground that most of the candidates have become over-aged since the past three years and the withdrawal of posts referred to the recruitment agencies are harsh for the PSC and SSB applicants who had applied, some of them having undergone the preliminary screening as well. He sought rollback of the order and holding of selections from among the candidates who had applied for the posts in response to various advertisements. The Provincial President cautioned against the attempts of usurping the rights of the permanent resident youth of Jammu and Kashmir and said that any move to sabotage this will be resisted tooth and nail. Gupta congratulated the newly nominated functionaries and urged them to further strengthen the party units at the grass roots level. Speaking on the occasion, Provincial President Women Wing Mrs Satwant Kour Dogra described politico-economic empowerment of women as key to harmonious growth of the society. "If the society has to grow harmoniously, the role of women in decision making will have to be ensured", Mrs Dogra said adding that this is the least women need to prosper and progress. Recalling the measures taken by the National Conference for women empowerment and emancipation, Mrs Dogra said the party has given adequate space to women in decision making and ensured their empowerment in various fields. She said 50 per cent seats for girls in medical colleges and reservation in the grass roots level democratic institutions remains a hallmark of the NC policy which stands for their betterment. Women have excelled as well by dint of their hardwork and determination. They have proved second to none and even excelled especially in the field of education, she added Referring to the problems being faced by the people, especially the women, Mrs Dogra expressed concern over the unprecedented hike in fuel prices and LPG gas cylinders, saying this has hit the masses the most. Inflation is staring at the poor with house wives facing the brunt on account of skyrocketing prices of the essential commodities. She said soaring prices and transportation charges have broken the backbone of the poor. Congratulating the newly nominated office bearers, Provincial Youth National Conference President Aijaz Jan enumerated various measures taken by the successive National Conference government with regard to women empowerment. Jan said the National Conference has a track record of undertaking female literacy in a big way and facilitating women to launch their income generating units. He recalled the achievements of women in different fields and the discerning mark they have made in academics. NC District President Sajjad Shaheen also addressed the gathering and exhorted the new office bearers to reach out to the people, especially the women in their respective jurisdictions and highlight their problems at appropriate forums. Shaheen said that the National Conference has all along remained in the forefront to provide a platform to women so that they can play their designated role in the governance as also the decision making. He said women's involvement in the decision making has been crucial and praise worthy. Dwelling upon the prevailing political situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Shaheen regretted that every segment of the society is at the receiving end due to administrative inertia. He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir are craving for good and responsive governance, jobs for youth, equitable development of all regions and sub-regions, vigorous implementation of welfare schemes, improving the quality of life of poor and weaker sections, politico-economic empowerment of marginalized segments of society especially the women. In the absence of the representative government, the people are feeling a vacuum and total disconnect with the administration, he added. |
