Jammu natives expect a better deal
4/5/2022 10:36:28 PM

Policies of the present regime in Jammu and Kashmir have created an impression that outsiders are being preferred over natives.
After the abrogation of Article 370, many changes have taken place in the Union Territory. The outsiders have taken over the businesses that were run by locals till August 5, 2019. Dominance of non-locals is more visible in Jammu region than in Kashmir.
Leaders of political parties have been claiming that the present dispensation is disempowering natives and is promoting the outsiders. Recently members of the Brick-Klin Association staged a protest against the government allowing bricks from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and other states invading the markets in Jammu. The owners of the brick-klins stated that if the government keeps on allowing these bricks into Jammu markets, then the local brick kilins will have to wind up their units and call it a day. On the other hand the mining contracts have been also taken by the outsiders and there are very few locals who deal with the building material.
Prior to the mining contracts being handed over to non-locals a truckload of sand used to cost between Rs 5000/ to Rs 7000/ but as on date the truckload of sand costs anything between Rs 13000/ to Rs 15000/. The outsiders are filling their coffers at the cost of the natives.
There were reports that Jammu based businessmen are mulling to wind up their ventures and move to other places where they can do business in peace. They are of the opinion that if the outsiders can set up their ventures in Jammu and capture the markets they can do the same in other states, but there is a big difference between other places and J&K. The government of J&K is promoting the outsiders and is facilitating their advent in the markets, but the governments in other states promote the natives and safeguard their interests.
Not only the businessmen, even the youth are suffering. They were promised 50,000 jobs when J&K was turned into a Union Territory. Instead of creating new job avenues the government even withdrew the posts that were announced prior to October 2019, when J&K started functioning as a Union Territory. The policies of the present regime have disappointed the people, especially Jammu natives, who are feeling cheated and betrayed.
