Islamic university under scanner for land allotment!
5/19/2022 11:06:55 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, May 19: The Islamic University of Science and Technology has come under the scanner of the government over the allotment of the land for the varsity’s main campus in Awantipora area of South Kashmir.
Highly placed sources the government has got credible inputs that major portion of the land on which the varsity was established by the then government led by Mufti Muhammad Sayeed in 2005 was given by the Wakf Board but that “no formal handover of the same land had taken place in transparency.”
“There are no proper records of the Wakf Board land measuring around 200 kanals to have been given for the varsity,” said a source in the Wakf Board.
The sources said the actual status would get clear once the board meeting is held in near future. “As of now the prima facie suggests absence of proper documentation and the same has been verbally conveyed (to government),” the sources said.
Sources said the matter was recently discussed at an informal meeting of the Wakf members but that formal inquiry into the matter can be started only after the annual meeting of the board.
When contacted, a senior functionary at the Wakf Board told the Early Times that the matter of land allotment to the IUST had come to their notice and that it would be “thoroughly examined for a crystal clear picture.”
Over the years, the IUST has been under scanner for numerous scandals including that of the financial dealings and the allegedly backdoor appointments. Interestingly there’s also a dispute between the Wakf Board and the IUST over the prospective control of the varsity.
The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora, J&K was established through an Act No. XVIII of 2005 dated 7th November 2005 passed by J&K State Legislature and notified by the then State Government, through Jammu & Kashmir Government Gazette dated: 11-11-2005.
While the varsity had started functioning in November, 2005 the teaching program was started in July 2006.
The IUST is accredited by NAAC with Grade ‘B’ and is recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) and Section 12(b) of UGC Act. The Technical and nursing programmes offered by the University are approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Indian Nursing Council (INC).
Officials said the land dispute can affect the status of the varsity.
