Azad not ready to take over as J&K Cong chief | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 14: Although Congress high command is thinking about appointing Ghulam Nabi Azad as president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief to end infighting in the J&K unit of the party, the former Chief Minister is giving the excuse of health to shoulder this responsibility. “Instead of accepting the challenge and taking up the responsibility of ensuring the victory of party in the coming assembly elections in J&K, Azad is giving the excuse of his age and health to shoulder the responsibility”, a senior Congress leader told The Early Times. Wishing anonymity the Congress leader said that on the one hand, Ghulam Nabi Azad has not given the name of any single leader of his camp to replace Ghulam Ahmed Mir nor he is ready to accept the challenge himself. “To end the uncertainty and chaos in the party, the Congress high command is seriously thinking to give all responsibilities to Azad because this decision will end anti-party activities of his loyalists”, sources said but added that former Chief Minister is hesitating to take the responsibility. As reported earlier by The Early Times, the Congress party high command is mulling over the idea of handing over full command to former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to end the factionalism. Leaders, who owe their allegiance to Azad, indulged in creating factionalism in the party. For the last newly two years Azad loyalists are not attending any official function of the party. In June, Congress leadership served show-cause notices to loyalists of Ghulam Nabi Azad for boycotting “Chintan Shivar” held at Patnitop to devise a strategy for coming assembly elections in J&K. A two-day “Chintan Shivar” was organized at Patnitop Hills in Udhampur district in first week of June, which was chaired by the AICC leader and In-charge J&K Affairs Rajni Patil. The Azad loyalists have been served show-cause notices for skipping the event. Notably, in November last year, 24 leaders including former ministers, former legislators, and office bearers from the “group” of veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad revolted against the PCC chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir and resigned from their organizational posts. Keeping in view the “indiscipline” created by his loyalists, a group at the national level has suggested the high command make Azad head of Jammu and Kashmir and give him all responsibility for the coming assembly elections in J&K. |
