Pvt schools turn business hubs | | | As the students have been promoted to new classes in Jammu and Kashmir regions private schools are once again in news for the wrong reasons. Parents are alleging that these schools are seeking exorbitant annual charges and are forcing them to buy books from a particular shop and are making them pay through their nose. The complaints are galore but the Education Department is acting as a mute spectator. It seems that the private schools are a law unto themselves and no one seems to be concerned about regulating them. The Fee Fixation Committee has taken many steps in the past to rein in these institutions but it appears that these schools are in no mood to implement the orders issued by the FFC. According to the media reports the parents have been directed to fall in line and follow the instructions and the ones who resist can shift their wards to other schools. This is not for the first time that the private schools are trying to enforce the writ. These institutions have been doing it for the past many years. Similar kind of situation had arisen in New Delhi and Punjab as the private schools defied the orders of the government and enhanced the tuition fee. Many big schools were de-affiliated and new admissions were stopped. Parents are asking if such stern measures can be taken in other states why cannot the same steps be taken in Jammu and Kashmir. For middle class families it’s becoming difficult to provide education to two to three children as the books, uniforms, tuition fee and transportation charges are drilling a hole in the pocket. Parents are alleging that they are being looted and no one is coming forward to break the nexus of fees, uniforms and books. The set of books prescribed by NCERT costs Rs 800/ but the same is being sold for Rs 3000/ to 5000/. It’s unfortunate but true that the schools are becoming shopping hubs. Parents are urging the administration to rein in these institutions. If stringent measures are not taken the day is not far when these schools would completely turn into commercial hubs rather than educational institutions. |
