Minor girl dies, 61 injured as footbridge collapses during Baisakhi celebrations in Udhampur

JAMMU, Apr 14: A minor girl died and sixty one persons, including several children, were injured on Friday when a footbridge collapsed in Udhampur district, officials said.
The incident took place at Beni Sangam in the Bain village of Chenani block during Baisakhi celebrations, they said.
People in large numbers were on the bridge when it collapsed, the officials said.
The bridge collapsed due to overloading as large number of people were on it at the time of the accident, Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar said. Police and relief teams rushed to the spot and began rescue operations, the officials said.
The injured were admitted to Chenani hospital, they said. Seven injured were moved to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, the officials added.
One among the injured identified as minor Anu Devi (10) daughter of Yash Paul of Chunti succumbed to her injuries at GMC Jammu, they said.
Videos and pictures purporting to show the extent of damage in the far-flung Chenani block have become widely circulated on social media.
SSP Udhampur Dr Vinod Kumar said that soon after the accident Police and other rescue teams reached the spot and started the rescue operation.
Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Krittika Jyotsna, said that total 62 Persons were Injured out of which 25 shifted to District Hospital Udhampur out of 25 in Hospital Udhampur 6 critical injured referred to GMC &H Jammu .she added that the Rescue operation is over. She added that as soon as the information received the District administration as well as Police launched Rescue operation and shifted all injured to Community Health Center Chenani.
