J&K: Opposition putting up united front impresses none | ‘Won’t make a big difference, people have to decide whom to vote for’ | | EarlY Times Report
Jammu, June 6: Opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir i.e. the National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and Congress are making desperate attempts to put up a united front in the Union Territory. According to the media reports NC, PDP and Congress have already finalized the seat sharing arrangement for 2024 Parliamentary elections. NC, as per the agreement, will contest two seats in Kashmir, while PDP would file its candidate from one seat in the Valley. The Congress would contest two seats from Jammu region. In 2019 parliamentary NC and PDP had contested against each other in Kashmir while both these parties had left two seats from Jammu region for the Congress. All the three seats in Kashmir were won by the NC, while two seats in Jammu region were bagged by Bharatiya Janata Party. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “Opposition parties in J&K are desperate to make a comeback and the leaders are aware that winning elections is not going to be a cakewalk. It seems that they are of the opinion that putting up a united front may help them to make an impact on the ground.” The analyst said, “It seems that NC, PDP and Congress need to be reminded that in Kashmir many new parties led by veteran politicians have emerged on the scene. In Jammu BJP has done well during the 2014 and 2019 Parliamentary elections due to people casting their votes in favour of PM Modi rather than the candidates.” He said, “It appears that the assembly elections in J&K will be held after the 2024 Parliamentary polls and the opposition parties are trying to stitch an alliance to tell the people that they also exist.” The analyst said, “National Conference and PDP may not find it that easy to win the Lok Sabha seats in Kashmir as both these parties will face stiff competition from new formations as they have tried to dominate the political scene during the past three years.” He said, “The Congress Party due to infighting is at crossroads in Jammu region and faces a tough competition from BJP and other regional parties.” “The three traditional parties coming together won’t make a big difference as it’s the people who have to decide whom to vote for,” the analyst added. |
