26 years on, 4 km road in Kathua village awaits completion, residents seek LG’s intervention

Early Times Report

Kathua, Sept 4: A link road connecting Lowang Main Road to Baugh in Tehsil Bani, District Kathua, has remained in a deplorable condition for the past 26 years, causing grave concerns among residents and commuters. “Despite its construction initiation dating back to 1997, the road has not been completed as sanctioned, with only one out of the planned four kilometers having been partially cut, and no protective infrastructure or blacktopping in sight,” a social activist Mudasar Ali told Early Times.
He expressed deep dissatisfaction with the dire state of the road. “It has become a dangerous route for those who have no other alternative, posing a significant risk of accidents due to its severely deteriorated condition. The absence of protective walls and blacktopping only compounds the danger,” Ali added.
Mohammad Hussain Malik, another social activist said, "The condition of this road is appalling, and it puts the lives of people at risk every day. We demand an inquiry into why, even after 26 years, this road has not been completed. Who is responsible for this negligence?"
He said, “Lack of progress on building this road is frustrating . They emphasize the urgent need for immediate action to address the road's condition before a major accident occurs.”
A local resident Mohammad Shahid Malik said, “Why has this road not been completed in the past 26 years since its construction began in 1997? Who is accountable for the apparent neglect of this critical infrastructure?”
Two other local residents Mehoob Malik and Ahmad Hussain Malik said, “An enquiry should be ordered to ascertain why the work on this road was abandoned.”
“We urge Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene and direct the concerned authorities to take immediate steps to make this road safer and more accessible for all, reducing the risk of potential accidents,” residents added.
