Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 11: While Jammu Kashmir Project Construction Corporation (JKPCC) is in denial mode over alleged discrepancies in the construction of fourth bridge, the fact of the matter is that over six weeks since it was closed for repairs, it is still closed, causing untold misery and inconvenience to the people of the city.
ET had reported that the bridge had to be closed for repairs four times in three years since it was constructed, following which the JKPCC issued a statement refuting the report, it did not care to disclose to the public as to why it had to close the bridge for vehicular traffic everytime during the monsoon.
Denying any damage to the bridge, JKPCC has been conceding damage to the approach road on either side of the bridge, whose retention walls are washed away while Tawi is in spate during the monsoon. Sensing the same problem again, JKPCCC cleverly got the bridge closed just before the first rain of the season. To add to the misery, meanwhile, the recent rains have damaged the barrage of the artificial lake as well.
Closure of 4th Tawi bridge by the JKPCC and district administration is an indication of complete lack of official foresight because of which entire Jammu is suffering for the last over a month. Complete breakdown of vehicular traffic on the canal road which is causing great inconvenience to the people and especially to thousands of Amarnath yatris coming to Jammu during the ongoing pilgrimage.
"This was the worst time when this crucial bridge could have been closed for vehicular traffic. First of all this was the yatra time and this bridge led the buses and other vehicles carrying pilgrims straight to the Yatri Niwas situated at Bhagwati Nagar; secondly, canal road is mostly marooned during monsoons and no vehicular traffic is possible for hours after every downpour" said Vishal Gupta, a resident of Rajinder Nagar.
Pertinent to mention here, the authorities closed down the 4th bridge on Tawi, just days before start of Amarnath yatra, without giving any prior information to the public. Many believe, the JKPCC authorities deliberately closed the bridge before the onset of monsoon as the approach road to the bridge which was washed away the previous year faced danger of erosion this year also. "This was ploy of the JKPCC authorities to avoid embarrassment for itself as the officers of the corporation knew that the approach road shall be washed off again" said an insider alleging, "It is surprising how district authorities allowed them to close the bridge despite Amarnath yatra starting within a couple of days after the move". People have meanwhile appealed to the district authorities to ensure resumption of vehicular traffic on the bridge at the earliest to save people from further inconvenience.
