Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 11: Finally in a significant development, the Peoples Democratic Party-Bharatiya Janta Party alliance has decided to launch a major crackdown against Friday protests in restive Kashmir. While the Jammu and Kashmir Police have come up with a formal advisory a day ahead of Friday, sources said from tomorrow police would act tough against the protesters "in a bid to prevent loss of precious lives as have been lost on previous Fridays." The police in its formal advisory this evening said: "It has been observed for last few Fridays that after the culmination of Friday prayers miscreants force the people to assemble on the chowks and roads; thus obstructing the normal traffic. Many a times these gatherings are manipulated to pelt stones upon the police/security force deployments."
"In order to avoid such situations the parents are requested not to allow their children to take part in such activities. Youth are advised not to fell prey to such machinations. The Imams and Khateebs are also requested not to deliver provocative speeches so that the situation is not exploited by vested interests," the police said.
Sources said by virtue of the advisory, the government would be strict against the Imams or youth who resort to any violence or inciting of violence in restive Kashmir. "We need to act tough to restore normalcy, so anyone defying the advisory will be dealt with iron hands," said a police official. Sources said the decision to launch a major offensive against the "conventional" Friday protests was taken after a meeting with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti who also happens to be the Home Minister. Mehbooba is also being advised by some of her ministers and a former police official close to her party. Sources also said from Friday the police will launch a massive drive to make arrests against "violence mongers." "Some of the faces are already under scanner, from tomorrow we will nab them red-handed and book them as per law," the sources said. In the ongoing unrest Friday's proved very critical for the security forces as protests went sporadic leading to large-scale causalities. "If Friday passes peacefully, the rest of the week passes peacefully," said a police official adding that the advisory aims at restoration of peace and to avoid any causality. "Basically we are for peace, we want peace," the police said.
