Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 19: With ex-President and Patron of National Conference (NC) unlikely to return to Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), the disputed association which is headed by Sports Minister Imran Raza Ansari is desperately trying to get numbers so that Minister's younger brother Irfan Raza Ansari is made President.
The faction headed by Imran Raza Ansari is making these efforts in the wake of Lodha committee recommendations which when implemented are going to result in the ouster of Imran Raza Ansari; the disputed President of JKCA and a Minister for Sports, Information and Technology in the Jammu and Kashmir government. Lodha committee has put a blanket ban on politicians especially those enjoying power being made heads of the cricket bodies.
Once recommendations are accepted and implemented, Imran would have no option but to demit the office of disputed President of the JKCA. Sources said that faction headed by Imran had invited his younger brother Irfan Raza Ansari, who is by profession a businessman in the working committee meeting of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) held on September 18, 2016. They added that Ansari is being involved in the affairs of JKCA purely because the faction headed by Imran doesn't want JKCA to be run by a professional cricketer or a stranger.
Despite knowing well, sources said that the team led by Imran is using all the tricks in the book to get numbers for electing Irfan as President if the Lodha committee cracks whip in the first week of December. Team Imran in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) includes General Secretary Iqbal Shah, Treasurer Abdul Rauf, CEO Manzoor Wazir, Vice-Chairman Kashmir Javed Ahmed Kitab and an important member Manzoor Gazzanfar.
Barring Treasurer Abdul Rauf, irony is that Imran Raza Ansari is leading a team whose members have no significant cricketing experience. The powerful General Secretary and mastermind of all alleged coups in JKCA Iqbal Shah has played just 1 first class match in which he scored 8 runs i.e. 2 in the first innings and 6 in the second. He played this Ranji Trophy match against Delhi on November 24, 2001 as opener for Jammu and Kashmir.
According to records, it took Iqbal 21 balls to score 2 runs in the first inning and 23 to score 6 runs in the second inning. Iqbal has played most of his cricket in valley for Kashmir Gymkhana. CEO of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) Manzoor Wazir used to play for Kashmir Gymkhana, from where to be selected to play for Jammu and Kashmir in Ranji. He made his debut in 1977-78, played 4 matches, scored 39 runs with 9 as his highest score. He was a middle order batsman.
He did not bowl a ball despite having been selected then in the category of All-rounder. He played for Jammu and Kashmir in Ranji for a year and then was dropped never to be selected again. Records further show that Manzoor did nothing extraordinary even for the club for which he claims to be playing since 1970. But Manzoor Wazir is an important member of JKCA since the last 20 years despite the fact that those who made a mark playing for Jammu and Kashmir in the first class are available and still playing cricket in one or the other format.
The treasurer of JKCA Abdul Rauf is someone with significant cricketing experience. But a look at the records reveals that he has played cricket despite not doing anything significant during his entire career. Rauf played 57 matches and scored just 1934 runs with highest score of 95 during his career spanning over 20 years from 1959-60 to 1978-79. He took 68 wickets in 57 matches with best of 5/25. This is around 1 wicket in every Ranji trophy match and an average score of 33 runs per match and 16 runs per inning. These are the career statistics of Treasurer of JKCA Abdul Rauf.
Vice-chairman Kashmir Javed Ahmed Kitab has no cricketing experience and is fighting a legal battle with Sopore Cricket club where he claims he was a member while the club disputes this contention of Kitab. Another important member Manzoor Gazzanfar is again not a cricketer. He attended working committee meeting as President of Kashmir Gymkhana Club in place of Mukhtiar Kanth, the original and undisputed President of KGC.
With relationships and friendships coupled with political and social considerations being the sole criterion, JKCA has been turned into a private enterprise by those who have no significant cricketing experience. If Jammu and Kashmir is unable to do well in the Indian cricketing scene, it is the JKCA which is responsible for this mess. The mess is getting compounded with each passing day and nothing is going to improve till JKCA becomes apolitical and professional association.
