Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 20: In a significant move to aware the common people about the effects of cardiovascular diseases Dr. Sushil Sharma (HOD Cardiology GMCH & SSH Jammu) holds a day long camp at Shastri Nagar in the Heart of Jammu.
The camp was inaugurated by Dr Sushil Sharma and T. Anguchuk (Excise Commissioner) along with Sh. Mubarak Singh (Vice Chairman JDA) in the presence of Members of the J&K Excise and Commercial Taxes Employee Welfare Society Jammu.
Accompanied by a team of young doctors, paramedics and volunteers, Dr.Sushil Sharma examined members of the welfare Society and people of the adjoining locality for the prevalence of cardiac diseases and other health ailments .More than 150 people were screened, evaluated, diagnosed and free medicines were given as per the requirements. During his interaction with the patients Dr Sushil stated that No doubt the present burden of CVD deaths is an adequate reason for attention but what is most depressing is the rise in mortality rate among the elderly population particularly in the developing countries. Age is the most important risk factor in developing cardiovascular diseases, with approximately tripling of risk with each decade of life. It is estimated that 82 percent of people who die of coronary heart disease are 65 and older . At the same time the risk of stroke doubles every decade of age 55years. "Aging is also associated with the change in the mechanical and structural properties of the vascular wall, which leads to the loss of arterial elasticity and reduced arterial compliance and may subsequently lead to coronary artery diseases. Hypertension and rhythm disturbance are more common in elderly patients, "He added. Dr Sushil highlighted that the risk factors for CHD in the elderly are the same as in younger patients, including diabetes, Hypertension, Tobacco smoking, Dyslipidemia, obesity, family history and physical inactivity. To keep one's heart healthy, he advised people to take a heart healthy diet, exercise regularly and consult the Doctor from time to time. The longer we delay the more costly and less effective the solutions are likely to be, "He Cautioned.
