Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement that currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations will not be legal tender from November 8 last has its immediate effect on a 'crorepati' police officer of J&K.
The police officer is alleged to be having land and other assets worth over Rs 300 cr in the state, besides having crores of rupees in cash. "He also has plots in the city's posh and most expensive localities in his name and in the names of his close relatives. He has also kept cash in the houses of his nears and dears," police sources alleged.
Common people have supported the move aimed at curbing black money, saying notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations were being mostly used for bribery purposes in the country. They have termed it as a big blow to the corrupt businessmen and politicians who take bribes and hoard money.
The senior police officer is also among the hoarders of black money. Sources said while he had exchanged lakhs of the old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes with the help of a senior officer of a private bank, the latter had now expressed his helplessness to help him anymore.
He had now sent his confidant officers to Kashmir and New Delhi via train and cabs to exchange the notes, sources claimed.
"He is at present holding a significant post and has been using his influence to exchange the useless notes. He had also held the additional charge of a post for quite sometime. Being influential and rich, he has always held important posts and has also been the district police chief once. He is into the property business since long. He has also made huge investments with some property dealers, besides being a silent partner with some big city businessmen. This way, he has amassed a huge wealth during his years of service in police department," sources said.
After demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, he was speechless for almost two days. But he became active after that and exchanged lakhs of rupees with the help of private bank officer. "He is now hopeful of exchanging his other notes too as he has already put his confidant officers on the job and sent them to Kashmir and New Delhi where he hopes to get them exchanged with the help of his acquaintances," sources said.
