| Ganderbal town sans garbage dumping site? | | Murder of SwaCHh Bharat Mission-III | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 22: In-spite of the focus of BJP lead Government at centre on sanitation, authorities have failed to even create a garbage dumping site in Ganderbal town. The local Municipality according to local residents is dumping all the garbage in water bodies and agricultural land.
Details with Early Times reveals that Municipal Committee (MC) Ganderbal from the date of its establishment has not been allotted any land for garbage dumping site. The constituency has been represented by Omar Abdullah as well in past , but during NC rule also the town could not get a garbage dumping site. As per reliable sources all the garbage which includes bio degradable , non bio degradable and even bio medical waste is dumped in local nallah Sindh and other wetlands of the district.
Early Times has filed several reports on Sanitation and issues related to it. This is not only the case of Ganderbal, but in all the 90 Municipal Committees, municipal solid waste is not at all dumped properly in a scientific matter…..
Pertinent to mention that hundreds of kilograms of garbage which includes harmful Bio-Medical waste generated from Sub District Hospital Khansahib is being dumped in "Doom Kul" which is a small nallah flowing through Khansahib. This illegal activity according to local residents is going on in the town from last several years as there is no Garbage dumping site available in Khansahib …. Locals also allege that Khansahib Municipality is not making door to door garbage collection in the area with the result heaps of garbage remains unattended.
Sources say that Municipal Committee (MC) Budgam has already began a pilot project of scientific waste management in the town to get rid of the garbage menace. MC Budgam is the first town committee which undertakes this kind of work by collecting garbage from door to door and segregating it at the source. The committee further plans to make bio-fertilizer from the biodegradable / wet waste for which local district administration has provided a piece of land to the Municipal Committee where composting pits have been constructed.
The existing garbage dumping site in Budgam town has been fully chocked , the new composting unit established by the committee will prove to be helpful for the local Municipal Authorities. There is an urgent demand of having a new dumping sites in different towns of the district that includes Khansahib towm as well. Due to absence of a scientific solid waste management system in Khansahib , Magam, Beerwah , Charar I Sharief and Chadoora towns, local Municipal authorities face lot of difficulties in tackling with the menace of garbage ….
" We appeal authorities particularly Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and Revenue Minister Basharat Bukhari to intervene and allocate land for dumping garbage in Ganderbal town. We also need Govt to create scientific solid waste management system in the town and punish the officials of local Municipality who dump garbage and bio medical waste in local water bodies and agricultural land" said Bashir Ahmad Sheikh a resident of Saloora Ganderbal while talking to Early Times. |
