SRINAGAR, Nov 22: More than four month long unrest in Kashmir valley has virtually led to a standstill in the developmental activities and people are suffering due to dilapidated condition of roads and absence of other basic facilities.
With work on two and half kilometer long Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover remaining suspended since July this year people of Kashmir valley are facing numerous difficulties in reaching various destinations located in Central Kashmir. People are upset that they would have wait for long enough before the project is completed.
"We were expecting that the work on flyover would be over by March 31, 2017, but that is not to be. Even if the work is resumed soon on the project it would take at least one more year to complete the same. This would mean that people would have to suffer for one more year on this front," said Mohammad Sultan, a resident of Natipora.
Minister for Finance, Haseeb Drabu had some days back said that the work on the flyover would be resumed in the next 20 days. He had said that Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to revise the deadline for the completion of project adding that the flyover would ease the traffic rush between Jehangir Chowk and Rambagh.
"The unrest has virtually put the people of Kashmir to trouble and people continue to suffer. With work remaining suspended on the flyover the people travelling to and fro Central Kashmir have been forced to take to alternate routes in reaching their respective destinations. The people at helm should get awakened at the earliest so that the problems of common masses are solved," said Mohammad Afzal, a resident of Sanat Nagar.
People as a whole demand that chief minister Mehbooba Mufti should intervene in the matter and ensure that the work gets resumed on flyover at the earliest. Common masses believe that they should not be punished for acts committed by handful of people.
"Development has taken a hit in Kashmir and it is important that people are not made to suffer. The chief minister should intervene in the matter and use her good office so that the work on flyover gets restarted at the earliest. Once the project is completed the people would heave a sigh of relief, but for that people at helm should take a lead," said Gulzar Ahmad, a resident of Chadoora.
Pertinently frequent traffic jams on the Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh stretch lead to wastage of time and it takes a lot of time for the people to complete their journey. The journey that would have been completed in 20 minutes would take at least one hour for being completed. It is expected that once completed the flyover would lead to easing of traffic congestion on this stretch.
