Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 22: Though the former Chief Minister late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had laid thrust on organic farming, the organic rice growers have been feeling cheated as there is hardly any difference in price of organic and inorganic rice crop.
Pertinently, when the incumbent coalition government of PDP- BJP assumed power in 2015, it had announced that three border villages including Suchetgarh, Vidhipur and Kotranka Khurd would be developed for organic farming on the pattern of Gujarat. The government had also made announcement for giving special aid to the farmers, who have been producing organic basmati in the said villages.
"But ironically, now the basmati growers of the said village, have been feeling cheated as the procurement agencies are procuring the organic produce on the same price as for inorganic crop", farmers Roshan Lal of Suchetgarh said.
Expressing his agony, Roshan Lal further said that they were passionate after the announcement made by, late Mufti Mohammed Sayeed regarding organic farming in the villages and had high hopes that the organic farming would prove a miracle for farmer community who have been facing losses due to low price of the basmati for three consecutive years.
"Undoubtedly, the farmers of entire region have been facing hardships due to low price of paddy for last three consecutive years but those who produced basmati by organic farming, have come under debt due to high cost of production and lesser yield," said farmer leader Choudhary Dev Raj, adding, the second reason is that we were totally and totally dependent on human labour to produce organic basmati, due to which the cost of the produce increases manifolds.
"If Agriculture department which prompted us for organic techniques in producing organic basmati is not fixing minimum support price then it is so difficult to manage it and arrange bread and butter for our children", said Choudhary Dev Raj who is also member of Basmati Rice Growers Association.
The distressed farmers said that marketing of crops is main bottleneck for the farmers and if government does not remove that bottleneck of marketing and does not fix minimum support price, none of the farmer will adopt organic techniques as farming is already in losses.
