Many School buildings constructed under SSA unsafe, locals demand probe | | | MS Nazki Early Times Report
Poonch, Nov 22: Several school buildings constructed under centrally sponsored scheme Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) are stated to be unsafe as the walls have developed cracks and use of sub standard construction material in Mendhar is alleged by the locals, sources said here today. Alleging use of sub standard material in construction of these buildings by contractors, the people alleged that only paper work was done while as concerned authorities turned a blind eye towards the norms meant for construction of school buildings.' "And lack of supervision to ensure the safety of these buildings for reasons better known to the officials at the helms of affairs, they said, adding thus we demand a thorough probe into the matter. They demanded a probe not lesser than the Education Minister of the state as why a handful blue eyed contactors were benefitted in lieu of the risk to students' lives. "Pertinent to mention here that Govt Middle School Devta which had a three rooms building to accommodate 60 students and 6 staff members in 1994, got a new constructed building in 2006 under SSA at an estimated cost of over Rs 9 lakh, the building developed cracks in main walls no sooner it was handed over to school authorities," sources said. When the parents of the students came to know that their childrens’ lives were at risk in school they protested and demanded probe in the construction work of School buildings under SSA. They alleged that influential and blue eyed contractors were allotted work who showed the work on papers only while as the fact remains that sub standard material was used in the absence of official inspections. Since the said school falls in Balakote education zone the children often face shelling incidents which leads to closure of school for days together. Balakote Youth Club chairman Er Majid Khatana alleged most of the buildings in the district constructed under centrally sponsored scheme SSA have met the same fate and have developed cracks posing dangers to students and faculty. Condemning the favourtism of authorities who allotted works to blue eyed contractors, he also demanded a thorough probe in the case. "How can we expect our children to compete with the world's best when too many of our school buildings are sub standard? Educational improvements resulting from the current programme of school building are not reaching the basic standards that the people expect, local said. They also added that we need to do better for all of our children and their hardworking teachers and thus urge the Government to review its programme of building new schools. |
