Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 27: Even as Election Commission agreeing to state government's proposal of deferment of Anantnag Parliamentary by polls and clubbing the same with the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat has given some relief to the ruling PDP, its leadership is watchful about the 'stand' and possible 'role' of estranged stalwart Tariq Hamid Karra who had won the seat in last Parliamentary polls by defeating opposition heavyweight Dr Farooq Abdullah. Karra, who has put himself in hibernation mode after resigning as MP and severing ties with the PDP, has not yet disclosed his cards about his political inclinations.
Sources said though PDP had wrested both the Parliamentary seats in last Lok Sabha polls conveniently, the leadership is skeptical about the similar support this time as much water has flowed down on political turf of the state during the last three years. The leadership is also doubtful about the mood of the voters post turbulent period of four month long unrest this year which has completely changed the colours for the mainstream parties in Kashmir region and which are bound to impact not just outcome but also the smooth conduct of the by elections.
However, sources said that the party is watchful about the role of Tariq Karra who is understood to be having good hold in many pockets of the Srinagar -Budgam constituency where he garnered huge support last time even in the stronghold areas of National Conference which eventually enabled him to push Dr Abdullah to wall. Even though Karra reluctantly agreed to contest the polls for MP seat, he worked very hard to consolidate voter support in each and every pocket of the constituency, sources said adding that this support base is still intact for the leader, no matter he has quit from the party as well.
Sources further said as of now though Karra is silent and has not disclosed his cards nor has he engaged himself any sort of political activity as yet, a couple of stalwarts from two main opposition parties are learnt to have approached him. Whether these meetings were on personal ground or having any political connotations, is not ascertained, said the sources, but it is also not clear what political stand and affiliations he would opt for in future, said the sources.
There are also rumours that since he has a significant grip over the voter base in many pockets of Srinagar -Budgam constituency, he may also consider contesting the by poll as an independent. However, in case of he choosing to stay away from the electoral fray, even then his 'strength' matters which when translated into support, can tilt the fortunes of any contestant in the bypolls.
