Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 29: BJP spokesperson Virendra Gupta's November 28 tirade against the Health Ministry and J&K Public Service Commission has not gone down well with the official BJP and credible sources reveal that the pro-Kashmir BJP is contemplating action against him, as he had been at regular intervals issuing statements which are against the party line.
"Virendra Gupta has been issuing statements at regular intervals questioning the employment policy of the PDP-BJP Government. His statements have caused embarrassment for the party. He is indulging in anti-party activities by making critical statements against the government of which the BJP as a part. Bulk of the party workers support his views and praise him, saying he is the sole pro-Jammu voice in the otherwise highly anti-Jammu BJP leadership. But there are some very influential leaders in the BJP as well as ministers, who do not appreciate Virendra's line. They say action has to be taken in the interest of the coalition," said a credible source within the party on condition of anonymity.
The source further informed that "the BJP leadership is particularly unhappy with the spokesperson because he is not just critical of the PDP-BJP government's employment policy and the manner in which bulk of developmental funds are manipulated by the PDP for the development of Kashmir but also for candid views on J&K," and added that "though he disbanded the Jammu State Morcha, yet he hold the view that that the existing political and administrative set up is anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh".
It is pertinent to mention here that on Monday Virendra issued a lengthy statement that accused the JKPSC of perpetrating injustice on Jammu youth. His statement said: "Out of total 123 selections in the year 2015 were made in the State Medical Department, whereas only 23 belong to Jammu region that constitutes merely 19% of the total posts of Consultants in Radiology, Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Pathology and Pediatrics. He further added that in the same year 15 selections were made in the State Medical College (9 in Jammu Medical College and 5 in Srinagar) against the posts of lecturer out of which only 2 selected lecturers were from Jammu region which makes 13% of the total posts".
Virender Gupta while drawing the attention of the state government towards the selections made in the Higher Education Department as Assistant Professors in the year 2016, also said that "people of Jammu region are facing a worst kind of injustice" and added that "9 candidates from Jammu region were selected against the 34 selections made (which is 26%); 7 candidates were selected against total of 26 in Physics discipline, which is 27%; 12 in Mathematics against total 25 selected, which is 48%".
Besides, the BJP spokesperson demanded implementation of the 1999 Singhal Committee report, which had suggested that all the seats available in the Jammu-based professional and technical institutions should be made the sole preserve of Jammu youth.
"Steps need to be taken to address the deprivation of the people of Jammu region in matter of selections through PSC and suggested that candidates from a province be selected against the posts vacant in the province, i.e. candidates from Jammu Province be selected against the posts lying vacant in Jammu Province and candidates from Kashmir Province be selected against the vacant posts existing in Kashmir province. There is need to implement the R.P. Singhal Committee report of 1999 with regard to admission in the State Professional Colleges, as the report said that the students from the Jammu province and Kashmir province be given admissions in the professional colleges existing in their respective provinces. This has become essential while looking at the sense of deprivation and neglect that is existing among the students and youth of Jammu region," his statement read.
There was nothing wrong in what the spokesperson said but the BJP leadership has disapproved of his line.
In case the BJP takes any action against Virendra Gupta, the party's image will get further dented and it will give an additional opportunity to the political foes of the BJP to attack it.
One has to wait and see what finally the BJP leadership does to the party spokesperson whose only fault was that he spoke for the neglected Jammu youth.
