srinagar, Dec 1: The sudden rise in militant activities in Jammu and Kashmir has again made the security grid in the state to remain on tenterhooks with fresh measures being made to foil any such incidents in future.
According to reports, the year 2016 witnessed a sudden rise in the militant activities in Jammu and Kashmir which again is turning out to be a major cause of concern for both the state government as well as of the security establishment at large.
With latest Nagrota incident, 89 security personnel have been martyred in action in Jammu and Kashmir this year. On November 29, seven Army personnel were martyred and many, including BSF personnel, were injured in two terrorist attacks.
Out of the 89 security men who lost their lives in the state this year, almost 200 have been injured in the state in 2016 alone. Of those killed, 27 were martyred post the surgical strikes carried out on September 29.
According to the figures available, in 2007, security forces lost 122 men. The numbers dropped to 57 in 2008, and by 2012, it fell to 15. It then began to climb. In 2013, 53 security personnel were killed.
This year, the militancy related incidents witnessed a swell with encounters and abushes taking toll in the state. Such a trend while worrying the state governor NN Vohra also made the security establishment to enact tough measures to counter terror. Governor N.N. Vohra expressed serious concern over repeated terrorist attacks on the security forces establishment. "Pakistan is continuing with the attempts to exacerbate the situation while India was seeking to restore peace and normality," said Mr. Vohra.
Reports have already been pouring about several youth in Valley went missing. Though there are apprehensions being expressed by the security grid that the number of local youth joining militancy could go higher after the killing of Hizb militant Burhan Wani. Furthermore, apart from locals joining militancy, there has been a sudden rise in the infiltration attempts across the LoC and International Border (IB).
There are reports that nearly 70 youth have disappeared in South Kashmir over the past three months leading them to conclude they might have been persuaded to take up the gun.
Meanwhile, there are high chances of the security establishment toughening its stand against the militancy related incidents with measures likely to be taken to equip the counter insurgency force.
On Thursday, the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed deep concern at the violence along the LoC and the International Border which has resulted in tremendous loss to life and property and caused dislocation to large section of the population living in border areas and called for de-escalation on both sides to give peace a chance.
