Kathua, Dec 17: Despite tall claims of the Government to improve the condition of public libraries, the Kathua public library is in a shambles. The public library of Nagri Town which caters to a huge population is suffering from government apathy since decades. The library, locals said lacks many facilities, which include the infrastructure and latest books and journals, proper chairs and doors. They said the library also is in need of immediate sweeping as books are lying under heaps of dust. The staff has packed books in gunny bags as there are no almirahs to host them, they said adding `even drinking water is not available'. The students who aspire to appear in competitive examinations have sought intervention of the authorities. They have demanded latest books, journals and adequate infrastructure. Library incharge said that the library at Nagri Town was established in 1992 .She said has written to the higher authorities for providing funds for renovation of building and for new 'almirahs', chairs, fresh books, newspapers, phone connection, computer, furniture etc but response was still awaited. |
